System Administrator

The System Administrator is responsible for all aspects of systems administration including hardware, software, storage, networks, applications, databases, and telecommunications. This includes implementation, configuration, coordination, control, maintenance, troubleshooting, security, usage monitoring and the development of specialized system procedures. This position also performs basic systems security administration functions, including creating customer profiles and accounts, monitors and manages system resources, including CPU usage, disk usage, tape backup systems; performs systems backups and recovery procedures; writes or modifies basic scripts to resolve performance problems; maintains system documentation and logs; performs or assists in troubleshooting and diagnosing production problems; maintain network security authentication including, application security; certificate administration, anti-virus, user authentication; provide monitoring and primary response and intervention for information technology related security incidents and violations.  This position is responsible for contributing to the positive improvement of customer satisfaction in the service department.



  • Employees in this position are required to proficiently perform any combination of the duties and responsibilities outlined below.
  • Install new/rebuild existing Servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
  • Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures.
  • Contribute to and maintain system standards.
  • Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
  • Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.
  • Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary.
  • Perform regular file archival and purge as necessary.
  • Create, change, and delete user accounts per request.
  • Provide Tier II/other support per request from Help Desk. Investigate and troubleshoot issues.
  • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies.
  • Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure/add new services as necessary.
  • Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures.
  • Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.
  • Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.
  • Participate in IT Services rotating on call emergency support.



Education: Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience preferred

Work Experience: Administration/management experience
Strong background in network administration
Experience with disaster recovery system (backup and recovery)
Minimum 4 years system administration experience.
AthenaHealth experience desired


Licensing and/or Certifications: MS Windows, NT / MS Server, MS office applications, SQL.



Required Knowledge of: Must be familiar Exchange, SQL, AD, VPN, Terminal Services

Required Skills: Excellent attention to detail is necessary.  Strong computer and data entry experience. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple projects in a timely manner.

Required Abilities: Must have the ability to communicate effectively and efficiently, Must have the ability to handle stressful situations.



Requires sitting or standing for long periods of time working in an office and networking closet. Light cabling may be required utilizing ladders and bending, stooping, and stretching required.  Must be able to move equipment weighing up to 50lbs.Working under stress and use of telephone required. Manual dexterity required for use of calculator and computer keyboard. Must have adequate hearing and speaking abilities to interact appropriately with others.  The noise level can range from low to high in the server room environment. This position must be able to deal with aggressive, hostile and sometimes irrational behavior in a high stress environment and have the ability to respond in a calm and professional manner.
